Some people can self edit very well, but unfortunately many years of reading SF fan fiction can demonstrate only too well the range of good, bad and all stages in between of the writing. Looking at some of the cheap and free eBooks makes me wonder if some of the authors have any idea about spelling, grammar, plot development etc etc etc. It is finding the wheat in the chaff which poses the problem. Brilliant for Zoe though!Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07201306601361606616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-18553027213932108152012-01-24T12:16:12.917+00:002012-01-24T12:16:12.917+00:00I have - just - submitted my book to an agent with...I have - just - submitted my book to an agent with the hope of eventual publication, but I know that it is a minefield out there. A huge amount of luck, combined with skill, is required.
I am steeling myself for multiple rejections (as for JK Rowling and others!), but I will keep telling myself that my 'success' is not the printed book but the fact that I have written it. It will always be available to my children and family, and perhaps that is success enough.
(But I'd quite like JKR's success too!!)Catharine Withenayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06936767499911371984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-13771499332426733322012-01-19T18:54:50.387+00:002012-01-19T18:54:50.387+00:00perhaps it is this immediate aspect of blogging th...perhaps it is this immediate aspect of blogging that provides the attraction of it..... also blogs generally are , short, to the point, immediate and generally satisfying..... perhaps they can also be termed somewhat lazy..... but I think not....
books and blogs......apples and oranges!John Going Gentlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14958171262765033946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-6194876285953453482012-01-17T23:30:33.452+00:002012-01-17T23:30:33.452+00:00You have started so many thoughts running here. I read so many blogs which are for me more interesting, arresting and real than conventionally much published work and they keep me coming back and back again. I think one result of the time which is now spent in reading blogs is that I read fewer magazines and print journalism (once a week perhaps instead of every day) and less fiction (fiction has to be great to keep me from the truth of insights into other lives). It is all on the shift. Great time to be alive and reading!Elizabeth Musgravehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09473705107636868753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-7129197891848243272012-01-17T16:45:33.393+00:002012-01-17T16:45:33.393+00:00Congratulations to Zoe. A friend's son has only published his SF novels as e-books, but has garnered lots of good reviews on Amazon on both sides of the Atlantic. Certainly one avenue for now as well as the future.Perpetuahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01214396019726161983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-85513558893493898022012-01-17T14:58:58.123+00:002012-01-17T14:58:58.123+00:00Delighted for Zoe.

I love blogging and reading blogs, especially yours which is always thought provoking. As you say, she has achieved enormous success already but we do wish her well for the final stages of the award.

And, what a minefield it is to measure success. Perhaps this is true for so many areas of the Arts? One does feel that in these stringent times, commercial factors are the overriding ones in determining who or what shall be published. This is not only limiting for all concerned, readers and writers alike, but is certainly very depressing for those trying to make their first steps in the literary world.Jane and Lance Hattatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16831890261259302647noreply@blogger.com
